‘Octavian’ translates a natural form into a very human state — a state of flexibility that helps one to endure. In this work, one senses an inner composure, intense focus and quiet resilience. The image seems to hold a simple and precise statement: I am holding on. That is why the sculpture resonates immediately. It touches on an experience familiar to everyone: the ability to change with circumstances whilst retaining one’s own centre. The inner question of this work rings out clearly: can you adapt?
For Aramare Vecchio, the moment of frozen movement is particularly important. The gallery identifies this as one of the key features of his sculpture: the gesture is fixed at the point of greatest expressiveness and retains its inner energy even at rest. In ‘Octavian’, this principle is revealed particularly convincingly.
The tentacles diverge through space as independent lines of movement, yet the entire form remains cohesive and whole. It is precisely this cohesion that makes the image powerful and memorable.
Within Vecchio’s thematic scope, mythology, dance, the peoples of the world, musicians and thematic series are always linked to the inner state and character of the form. ‘Octavian’ continues this artistic logic through the image of the sea. In Japanese cultural tradition, the octopus is associated with notions of vitality adaptability, resilience and the ability to keep moving even after loss. This theme aligns particularly well with the overall message of the stand, dedicated to inner resilience, mental composure and the search for balance in difficult times.
