Sad Giselle is bent in a dance pose. Her hair is neatly arranged, and her hands are modestly folded. The patinated dress unfurls like a lunar fan, a delicate wing of a nighttime moth. In this sculpture, the character appears in the image from the final act of the ballet of the same name, when Giselle is no longer the flower-crowned girl but a beautiful spirit, a symbol of all-forgiving love.
