‘The Joker’ reveals a state of duality in which play becomes a means of retaining inner freedom.
This work conveys intelligence, irony, hidden strength and that rare state where a person does not reveal themselves fully, yet does not hide behind a mask entirely. The image resonates like an inner monologue: I see more than I show. This is precisely why the sculpture immediately draws the eye. It speaks of a role, of choosing one’s distance, of the ability to maintain inner independence even within the game.
For Arsen Avetissian, this state is particularly natural. His sculptural work is built on a combination of theatrical expressiveness, psychological depth and clarity of form. The gallery has previously highlighted the sharpness of silhouette, the precision of lines and the harmony of forms. In ‘The Joker’, these qualities take on a particular sharpness: the image is composed, almost theatrically precise, yet internally tense. The figure does not merely exist in space, but retains a character, a hidden gesture of thought, an inner role.
The choice of image itself is very precise here. The Joker is not merely a character, but a state of consciousness in which play, unpredictability, intellect and the ability to remain beyond unambiguous interpretation converge. Arsen Avetissian does not illustrate this motif literally. He is interested in the individual at the moment of inner displacement, when the personality has already stepped beyond the confines of a mere social mask, yet still retains it as a tool. Consequently, the work is perceived as a visual statement on the dual nature of man, on the freedom of one’s inner stance, and the tension between the visible and the hidden.
The material plays an important role here. The silver plating enhances the sense of theatricality and the image’s inner, cool composure. The surface becomes an active part of the character, lending the sculpture a sense of detachment, brilliance and intellectual playfulness. It is precisely this quality that ensures ‘The Joker’ comes across not as a decorative figure, but as an embodiment of a complex psychological presence.
