Vyacheslav Savvich Mikhailov (1945, village Arzgir, Stavropol Territory) – Honored Artist of Russia. Member of the Union of Artists of Russia, member of the National Association of Italian Artists “ITALART”.
After he received an academic education in the workshop of Evsey Moiseenko at the Leningrad Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, Mikhailov focuses on the search for an individual manner of painting. He is not attracted to the language of Socialist Realism painting and becomes closer to the circle of unofficial artists who emerged in Leningrad and who sought to embody their own artistic and aesthetic views in underground art.
The artist pays particular attention to the surface of his works, filling his canvases with gesso, the primer used in icon painting. Several layers of the gesso create a “signature” convex rough texture, which turns the painting into an object for careful study, scrutiny.
Today Vyacheslav Mikhailov’s canvases have not lost their textural expressiveness, but have changed the vector of study from religious metaphysics to the world of objects. Exploring the possibilities of pigments and color combinations, the artist creates spectacular still lifes, cityscapes and abstractions.
