The source of inspiration for this sculpture was the Indonesian and Balinese sacred dance of Rangda. Rangda is a mythological character associated with the Hindu goddesses Durga and Kali. She is the queen of witches and demons, yet her mask is revered in village temples as a protector and defender against evil. During performances, Rangda dancers fall into trance, their movements are intentionally jerky and spasmodic. This dance resembles the shamanic dances performed in the sculptor's homeland, Mongolia. However, the shaman's clothing obscures the body's movements, prompting the author to turn to this tradition. The lighter southern costume allows us to trace twists, gestures, and muscle tension. The characteristic hand gesture was conceived by the sculptor as a symbol of ecstatic improvisation.
